ABOUT US

SAWIMA

The South African Women in Mining Association (SAWIMA) is a pioneering organisation dedicated to empowering women in the mining industry. Our mission is to unlock the potential of South African women in mining as a means of achieving economic emancipation. Through our comprehensive initiatives, we aim to create a supportive environment where women can thrive and contribute their skills, expertise, and perspectives to the mining industry.

Organization Background

Established in 1999, SAWIMA, in association with the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), was founded when the transformations and de-racialization of the economy was a priority. Its aim was to support the vision of increasing the number of women participating in the mining sector at all levels. We have since grown into a leading organization, committed to driving change, advocating for equal opportunities, and fostering an inclusive culture in mining companies worldwide.

Our Mission

SAWIMA aims to unlock the potential of South African women in
mining as a means of achieving economic emancipation through:
• Lobbying and advocacy.
• Capability and capacity development.
• Creating awareness of opportunities in mining.
• Facilitating access to funding.
• Investment management.

Our Vision

At SAWIMA, we ignite sustainable livelihoods of women through active participation and ownership in the mining sector. We strive to eliminate barriers and biases that hinder the progress of women in mining and promote an environment where every person can thrive and succeed based on their skills, qualifications, and dedication.
